White Paper on Responsible Tourism
The Sovereign has committed the Principality to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, and to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050! It's a powerful objective, and one that requires everyone's support. On a national scale, the actions focus on biodiversity, resource management and reducing greenhouse gases.
Monaco's tourism sector is committed to following the environmental policy instigated by the Prince's Government, and all those involved are working towards more responsible tourism. The Destination and its partners are putting in place solutions to ensure optimum management of resources. For example, the majority of hotels have opted for environmental certification, and soft mobility is being promoted through the development of a public transport network and efficient intermodal solutions. Awareness-raising campaigns are regularly organised on the themes of waste sorting, the fight against food waste, the protection of biodiversity, etc. As a Responsible Tourism Destination, Monaco encourages tourism for all, and numerous efforts are made to improve accessibility and create new infrastructures.
The result of a project initiated in 2020, the Responsible Tourism White Paper was published in November 2021, at a time when the tourism sector, hit by the health crisis, was becoming aware of its responsibilities and the need to question certain models. The aim of this document, which is based on analyses of surveys, benchmarks and discussion workshops, is to provide a better understanding of Monegasque tourism and identify its strengths and weaknesses with a view to preparing the tourism of tomorrow and making it even more sustainable by basing it on the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations and the Principality's Energy Transition objectives. It is a collegiate effort, led by the Tourism and Convention Authority and François Tourisme Consultants, with all the destination's partners, the help of the Mission pour la Transition Energétique and the support of the Direction de l'Environnement.
Prefaced by H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco and Mr Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the World Tourism Organisation, the White Paper represents the foundation stone of the project. It has served as a basis for identifying areas for improvement and action that will be developed in the very near future as part of the responsible tourism strategy, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN and the Transition Goals.
