Monaco, a committed destination
In Monaco, protecting the environment has been a top priority for many years. At the beginning of the 20th century, Prince Albert I was already encouraging people to "know, love and protect the oceans". This commitment has been steadily strengthened, particularly under the impetus of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, who is pursuing an ambitious policy in favour of sustainable development at both national and international level.
At national level, efforts are focused on preserving biodiversity, optimising resource management and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The Sovereign has committed the Principality to reducing its emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. This trajectory is reinforced by a new intermediate target of -67.6% by 2035, set by Sovereign Order in October 2025, with the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. This ambitious goal requires the mobilisation of everyone.
Monaco's tourism sector is fully aligned with the environmental policy promoted by the Prince's Government, and all those involved are committed to more responsible tourism. The destination and its partners are deploying solutions aimed at optimising the management of resources.
For example, most of the Hotels have obtained environmental certification, and soft mobility is encouraged by the development of an efficient public transport network and effective intermodal solutions. Awareness-raising campaigns are regularly organised on themes such as waste sorting, the fight against food waste and the protection of biodiversity.
As a sustainable tourism destination, Monaco promotes tourism for all, and is working hard to improve accessibility and create new inclusive infrastructures.
