Tourist destination
- To date, Monaco has 2,068 certified rooms (Green Globe, Green Key), i.e. more than 80% of its hotels.
- 97% of hotels have signed the National Pact for Energy Transition (i.e. 2,418 rooms).
- A sustainable gastronomy charter has been created to support the development of practices in the food sector and to promote the most virtuous initiatives. It aims to encourage a more responsible approach to production, supply and consumption.
This charter is part of the momentum generated by the first Sustainable Gastronomy Summit, to be launched in Monaco in 2023. This founding event was initiated by three-star Monegasque chef Alain Ducasse, a leading figure in the field of committed gastronomy.
- Few destinations can boast around 300 days of sunshine a year. When the horizon darkens, there's always Monaco to set up your sunny haven of peace!
Energy/Resources
- The Principality is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, a trajectory reinforced by a new intermediate target of -67.6% by 2035, set by Sovereign Order in October 2025 , with the ultimate goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
- The objective set by the Sovereign is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
- The waterbus that crosses the harbour between Monaco-Ville and the Casino is electric and runs on solar energy.
- The Principality of Monaco hosted the Monaco Control Center for the first Solar Impulse round-the-world flight, a project initiated by Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg.
- Monaco was one of the forerunners in the use of Heat Pumps The Hôtel Fairmont Monte-Carlo, inaugurated in 1975, already had a highly sophisticated heating and air-conditioning system that drew water from 40 metres down in the Mediterranean. Other examples of buildings heated or cooled using seawater heat pumps in Monaco include the Grimaldi Forum Monaco, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, the Auditorium Rainier III and SBM establishments.
- In addition to this technology, the Principality is also working with SeaWergie the Principality is also deploying two thalassothermal loops in the La Condamine and Larvotto districts to support the energy transition in these buildings. This innovative system uses the heat naturally present in seawater to heat and cool the buildings. The energy recovered in this way is fed into high-performance heat pumps, significantly reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, while providing sustainable thermal comfort for residents.
Biodiversity
- 20% of the territory is covered by green spaces (public or private)
- Monaco has 2 marine protected areas , including an educational marine reserve
- Terrae specialises in urban agriculture, designing farms in the heart of cities using environmentally-friendly practices to produce fruit, vegetables and other crops locally. It also organises educational and therapeutic workshops and awareness-raising programmes, with the aim of bringing city-dwellers closer to nature and promoting sustainable food.
With Terrae, a different kind of city is possible!
- The Carob tree is Monaco's national tree! Its real name is Ceratonia siliqua, but it is also known as the Egyptian Fig or Pythagorean Bean... It adapts very well to the Mediterranean soil and climate. Over time, carob has been used to feed animals and people in times of famine and war. Today it is known as E410 (because it is used as a food additive).
But what's special about carob is that it contains small, very hard seeds... all weighing the same: 200 mg, known as "carats", which have been used since ancient times as a unit of measurement for precious stones!
The Carob tree can also be found as a liqueur at the Distillerie de Monaco , which has created a drink from Monaco's national tree, Carruba!
Mobility
In Monaco, soft mobility is also about ingenuity. The Principality offers locals and visitors alike a number of ingenious public transport links. Available 24 hours a day, these make it easier to get around on foot, despite the territory's sloping topography.
Mobee is the Principality's 100% electric car-sharing service. The fleet is made up of 5 or 2-seater vehicles.
The Compagnie des Autobus de Monaco (CAM) plays a major role in soft mobility thanks to its fleet of diester-powered buses. It also runs the Monabike service and the boat-bus linking the two shores of the port.
Monabike 350 electric bicycles and 49 stations.
The Principality aims to be ever more inclusive, for locals and visitors alike, and has launched Street Nav. Designed to identify the most accessible routes, it helps wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility to get around Monaco, avoiding stairs, steep inclines and areas with inadequate facilities.
A 'Waze' for people with reduced mobility, illustrating yet another initiative that reflects Monaco's commitment to accessibility and inclusion.
Events dedicated to soft mobility
The Principality also hosts several major events celebrating sustainable mobility:
Monaco E-Prix: a 100% electric race organised on the legendary Monegasque circuit, illustrating the Principality's commitment to environmentally-friendly mobility.
Rallye Monte-Carlo Energies Nouvelles: this historic rally is reserved for vehicles using alternative energies (electricity, hydrogen, biofuels), and promotes the energy transition in the automotive sector.
E-Rallye Monte-Carlo: an all-electric event featuring production electric and hybrid cars, demonstrating the feasibility of zero-emission mobility even over long distances.
Ever Monaco: Exhibition and conferences on environmentally-friendly vehicles and renewable energies. This is one of the Principality's key events for showcasing innovations in soft mobility (electric cars, bicycles, hybrid boats, etc.).
It takes place every year at the Grimaldi Forum.
Monaco Energy Boat Challenge: The Monaco Energy Boat Challenge is an annual competition for electric and hydrogen-powered boats, held in the Port Hercule. The event showcases innovations in clean propulsion and promotes sustainable mobility on the water.
Monaco Ocean Week: Although its main theme is marine conservation, some sections focus on sustainable mobility and green technologies to reduce the environmental impact of sea-related transport.
Top Marques Monaco: A top-of-the-range motor show which, in recent years, has increasingly featured electric and hybrid supercars, reflecting the move towards more responsible vehicles.
These events help to raise public awareness and promote innovation in sustainable transport.
