"Magies d'ailleurs", the new temporary exhibition at the Museum of Prehistoric Anthropology

When faced with the unknown (illness, death, the future), rituals are a way of bringing order to chaos, of ‘knowing what to do’, of warding off fear and of facing trials.

How do we move from the profane to the sacred? What meaning is given to the gestures of daily life? What role do shamans, healers and priestesses play? What objects are used in these exchanges between humans and gods: fetishes, masks, cult statues?

How diverse are these practices, but also what do they have in common? What is the history of magical rituals, their roots, their raison d’être? How can we understand the precise meaning of gestures that are repeated and passed down from generation to generation, from master to initiate, from father to son?
