2025 Tourism Survey: Monaco has surpassed the 6.7 million visitor mark, generating nearly 1.4 billion euros in direct spending
A destination that is proving increasingly popular
In 2025, Monaco welcomed nearly 6.7 million visitors*, confirming its appeal to both local and international visitors.
Of these visits, 92.5 per cent were by day-trippers* who came to explore the Principality for the day, whilst 7.5 per cent were by tourists* staying for at least one night. Although the latter group is smaller in number, their impact on the economy is very significant.
In total, visitors generated 9.3 million visitor days and over 1.4 million overnight stays. Tourists stayed for 3.8 days, compared with 1.2 days for day-trippers. Hotels remain the preferred form of accommodation, accounting for more than 7 out of 10 stays.
A loyal and international clientele
Nearly one in two visits is made by visitors residing in France, which is the destination’s main local market.
Tourists, however, have a much more international profile: 42 per cent of stays involving overnight stays are made by visitors from countries outside the European Union.
Couples are the most common type of visitor (37 per cent), ahead of families (32.7 per cent). Unsurprisingly, leisure and holidays remain the primary reason for visiting, accounting for nearly 95 per cent of trips.
To reach the Principality, visitors mainly opt for cars or hire cars (42.6 per cent of visits) as well as the train (33.3 per cent). Those staying in the Principality, meanwhile, mainly travel by taxi (34.8 per cent).
A significant contribution to the Monegasque economy
The study confirms the economic importance of tourism for the Principality.
A day-tripper spends an average of 76 euros per day, whilst a tourist spends 348 euros per day. Based on the average length of stay, these expenditure figures amount to 85 euros and 1,670 euros per visit respectively.
Visitors from the Near and Middle East have the highest levels of spending, exceeding 1,000 euros per day per person during their stay in Monaco.
In total, direct visitor spending is estimated at nearly 1.4 billion euros in 2025. This figure represents 6.8 per cent of the Principality’s total turnover, excluding the financial and insurance sectors.
Tourists: the driving force behind the sector
Although they account for only 7.5 per cent of recorded visits, tourists alone generate 61.4 per cent of the sector’s economic benefits.
This finding illustrates the strategic importance of a high-value-added international clientele, combined with a local clientele that forms the bedrock of visitor numbers. It also confirms Monaco’s ability to combine appeal, quality of offering and economic performance.
Guy Antognelli, Director of Tourism and Conventions, said: “Our ambition is not to welcome ever more visitors, but to attract more tourists who generate high added value for Monaco’s economy. All the initiatives undertaken by the Monaco Government Tourism and Convention Authority are in line with this approach to qualitative and sustainable growth.”
